Muscovy Ducks

Welcome to our little corner dedicated to our beloved Muscovy ducks! We currently have a lively flock of about 20 ducks, each with their own unique personalities and quirks. Our feathered family includes some notable characters like Fred, White Duck, Brown Duck, and “the Twins,” who always seem to be up to something together.

Why Muscovy Ducks?

Muscovy ducks are wonderful additions to our farm. Known for their quiet demeanor and friendly disposition, they’re incredibly easy to care for and provide multiple benefits to our sustainable farming practices:

  • Eggs: Fresh Muscovy eggs are delicious, nutritious, and perfect for baking or breakfasts.
  • Meat: Their meat is lean, flavorful, and highly sought after for gourmet dishes.
  • Compost: The bedding from their coop, made of hay remnants gathered from our horse feeders, becomes nutrient-rich compost, essential for maintaining healthy soil.

Our Duckponics System

At the heart of our sustainability efforts is our duckponics system. Our pond isn’t just a beautiful centerpiece—it’s part of an integrated aquaponics cycle. The water, enriched by the ducks, circulates back into the greenhouse media beds, providing essential nutrients that boost plant growth and productivity. It’s a natural, closed-loop system that benefits both plants and ducks alike.

Duck Coop & Pond Life

Our ducks live comfortably in a specially designed coop, bedded with soft hay collected from fine remnants left in horse feeders, making sure nothing on our farm goes to waste. By day, they enjoy swimming, splashing, and socializing around their picturesque pond. While we are up the 20 ducks, we started with 4 ducks and a drake.

Fred & Ethel (White duck) our charming elder drake and duck, always supervising the flock and ready to catch treats if you toss him worms.

Brown Duck is our mama duck, constantly bringing up the rear and making sure everyone else gets in at night and ready to build a nest under any available bush.

Our duck coop and the pond, integral parts of our farm’s ecosystem. The nutrient rich pond water is piped back up into the Greenhouse and through the media bed and then gravity flows back into the pond.
